Brown Bread Shira

When I was a kid, bread shira was a favorite snack item in our home. We didn’t eat many bread dishes at that time so my mother used to make this dish which me and my brother used to love. Hope you will also like this dish. You can also use white bread instead of brown in this recipe. If you don’t have fresh bread stale works just fine.

Servings 3 People

Ingredients

  • 9 Brown Bread Slices
  • 3 Medium Onions (1 1/2 Cup)
  • 2-3 Green Chilies
  • 2 Stalk Curry Leaves
  • 1 Tsp Sugar
  • 1 Tbsp Freshly Grated Coconut
  • 5 Tbsp Oil
  • 1/2 Tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1/2 Tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 1/4th Tsp Asafoetida
  • Fresh Coriander Leaves
  • Salt

Instructions

  • Chop onions and green chilis.
  • Grind all the brown bread pieces in a blender.
  • In a pot, heat oil. Add mustard seeds. When mustard seeds starts to sputter, add turmeric powder, asafoetida, chopped onion, chilis and curry leaves.
  • Add salt and sugar and cover it with lid. Let it cool for 10 minutes on low heat. You can add little water taking care not to burn it.
  • Add ground bread and mix well.
  • Add coconut. Mix Well.
  • Add chopped coriander leaves. Turn off the burner. Keep it for 5 minutes covered and then serve.

Notes

After adding the bread, mix well and turn off the burner immediately. If you keep it stirring then the bread starts to loose its moisture and the shira will be dry. I have used brown bread here. Alternatively you can also use white bread. I have assumed 3 bread slices per person.
You can also chop bread slices instead of grinding.
