Coconut Chutney With Urad Dal

This is a side dish usually served with South Indian delicacies like idli, dosa, medu wada etc. The use of urad dal and roasted chana dal gives this chutney it’s unique taste.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 Cup Grated Fresh Coconut
  • 2 Tsp Urad Dal
  • 1 Tsp Roasted Chana Dal
  • 1 Green Chili
  • 1 Inch Ginger
  • 1/4th Tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1/2 Tsp Sugar
  • 1 Dry Red Chili
  • 1/4th Tsp Asafoetida
  • 3 Tsp Oil
  • 1/2 Cup Water
  • Salt

Instructions
 

  • In a pot heat 1 tsp oil and fry half of urad dal.
  • Blend coconut, fried urad dal, roasted chana dal, green chili, ginger, sugar and salt by adding 1/2 cup water.
  • In a pot heat remaining 2 tsp oil. Add mustard seeds, remaining urad dal, asafoetida and red chili and fry for 1 minute on a low heat. 
  • Add it to the chutney.

Notes

Use freshly grated coconut for this chutney.
