Amba Dal

Amba dal is a side dish made with raw mango and chana dal. The recipe is very popular in konkan region of Maharashtra as it is a mango growing region. This dish can be served with chapati or can be served as a salad as well. Chana dal has a nutty flavor. The sour raw mango takes this dish to a whole new level.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 1/2 Cup Chana Dal
  • 1 1/2 Cup Peeled And Grated Raw Mango
  • 2 Tsp Sugar
  • 6 Tbsp Oil
  • 1/2 Tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1/2 Tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 1/4th Tsp Asafoetida
  • Chopped Fresh Coriander Leaves
  • 1-2 Tbsp Water
  • Salt

Instructions
 

  • Soak chana dal in water for 6 hours.
  • Coarsely grind it in a blender adding 1-2 tbsp of water.
  • Mix grated raw mango, chopped coriander leaves, sugar and salt to chana dal.
  • In a kadhi heat oil. Add cumin seeds. When cumin seeds stars to sputter, add turmeric powder, asafoetida.
  • Pour the above tadka to the chana dal mixture. Mix well.
  • Let it rest for 30 minutes and serve.

Notes

This dish is generally prepared in summer when we get raw mangoes easily. However you can substitute lemon juice so that you can prepare it throughout the year. 
This dish is served at room temperature.
