Kande Pohe

Kande pohe is a dish made with flattened rice cooked with onion and peas. It is a simple breakfast dish prepared in many Maharashtrian households. In fact this dish is so popular in Maharashtra that you will find many road side joints serving this dish during morning hours.

Ingredients
  

  • 3 Cup Flattened Thick Rice (Jade Pohe)
  • 3 Medium Onions
  • 1/2 Cup Peas
  • 2-3 Chilies
  • 2 Stalk Curry Leaves
  • 1/2 Cup Water
  • 1 Tsp Sugar
  • 3 Tbsp Oil
  • 1/2 Tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1/4th Tsp Asafoetida
  • 1/2 Tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 2 Tbsp Grated Fresh Coconut
  • Fresh Coriander Leaves
  • Salt

Instructions
 

  • Wash the flattened rice (pohe) on a strainer and let all the extra water drain.
  • Cook the peas in the pressure cooker.
  • Finely chop onion. Chop green chilies.
  • In a pot heat oil. Add mustard seeds. When mustard seeds starts to sputter add asafoetida, turmeric powder, chilies, curry leaves and fry for a minute.
  • Add chopped onions and salt and  1/2 cup of water. Cover the pot with the lid and let the onion cook.
  • Add flattened rice (pohe) and sugar and saute it till everything is mixed well.
  • Add peas and saute for a minute and turn off the burner. Cover the pot with the lid for 5 minutes.
  • Garnish it with freshly grated coconut and coriander leaves and serve the pohe.

Notes

I have taken 1 cup flattened rice per person. After adding the pohe do not saute them for a long time as they loose their moisture and becomes tough. If you like you can also add peanuts in this dish.
